What Happened?

In October 2020, ProMedica’s Paramount subsidiary notified McLaren St. Luke’s of its decision to terminate the hospital’s in-network provider status for its commercial and Medicare Advantage health plans. ProMedica has been clear they issued the termination because of McLaren’s acquisition of St. Luke’s, which will make new investments in the hospital’s infrastructure and services possible and provide greater competition for ProMedica.

The termination would have prevented Paramount members from receiving non-emergency care at any McLaren St. Luke’s or WellCare Physicians Group location at in-network rates, effective January 1, 2021.

However, on December 29, 2020, the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Ohio granted a preliminary injunction against ProMedica’s decision to terminate McLaren St. Luke’s in-network provider status. The Court also denied ProMedica’s motion to dismiss the case. This means Paramount members will be able to continue receiving care from McLaren St. Luke’s and WellCare Physicians Group without any disruption in service.

This ruling is a victory for not only the Paramount health plan members who will be able to continue receiving care from the physicians and caregivers they know and trust, but also our entire community. We are pleased to continue serving the thousands of individuals and families who have come to rely on McLaren St. Luke’s and look forward to expanding and enhancing our services in the years ahead.
